Hollow Knight
Hollow Knight

My favourite video game. This shit is the bee knee's and I don't fuck around with those words. Ambience, exploration, gameplay, story, soundtrack - this game has it all.

Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy

My second favourite favourite video game. Level design ? Yes, of course. Soundtrack ? Fucking amazing. Ambience ? Probably the best in any game I've played. This shit rocks.

Outer Wilds
Outer Wilds

A knowledge-based puzzle game - any spoilers can ruin the experience PERMANENTLY. Helped me abstract the concept of death. In my opinion, this is probably the best game ever made.

Hyper Light Drifter
Hyper Light Drifter

A fast-paced 2D RPG. A masterpiece in level design, ambience, and world building, all packed in a short playthrough. I cannot put into words how good the game is. Play it.

The Stanley Parable
The Stanley Parable

Who doesn't love this game. The very concept is already very cool, but it actually makes use of it ??? Correctly ???? Always funny to force people to play through the game, just to see what they'll do.

Zelda : Twilight Princess
Zelda : Twilight Princess

The first Zelda game that really impacted me. It lacks in a lot of area, but makes up for it with incredible ambience, and an immersive story and universe.

Splatoon 2 : Octo Expansion
Splatoon 2 : Octo Expansion

The best content in the Splatoon series, and the only reason anyone would buy Splatoon 2 now. The vaporwave aesthetic is exquisite, excellent level design and gameplay.

Warframe
Warframe

In a nutshell : the blueprint by which every free game should build itself. No content behind paywalls, battlepass is free, premium currency is tradeable so very very few things are paywalled, and all of those are cosmetics. The devs love the community and interact with it a lot. It's great.

Outer Wilds : Echoes of the Eye
Outer Wilds : Echoes of the Eye

The DLC is great! It's still really in the same vibe as the base game. But in my opinion, the DLC could've been *better*. And that's my only problem with it. It's still like, one of the best pieces of content in a video game ever, so I forgive <3

Bloodborne
Bloodborne

My favourite Soulslike game.. I really like the aesthetic of this game. The combat feels good and the lore is great. But the Lovecraftian horror is what brings it up so much.

Tunic
Tunic

Another knowledge-based puzzle game with quick combat gameplay. Tunic is great - from the art style to the puzzles. It's a really nice experience that's 10 times deeper than what it appears.

Zelda : Breath of the Wild
Zelda : Breath of the Wild

Looking at it objectively, probably the best 3D Zelda game. While the world can feel a bit empty, and the UI is definitely not the best, the game's atmosphere and terrain are god damn marvelous, and the world building is quite good as well.

Splatoon 3
Splatoon 3

Octo Expansion's formula, revisited with incredible art direction and soundtrack - not uncommon for Splatoon games. It does lack a bit in inovation compared to Octo Expansion, but the realisation is perfect, so who can complain.

Little Nightmares 2
Little Nightmares 2

The second installment is better than the first ! Improvement is a scarce quality in modern game studios... Level design is better, environnements improved and are more diverse. Cinematically, even better than the first. And the bad guys are even scarier.

Ultrakill
Ultrakill

Dopamine in a box. Jesus Christ this game spikes my adrenaline levels. Genuinely good gameplay and level design. Incredible soundtrack. HUMANITY IS DEAD. BLOOD IS FUEL. HELL IS FULL.

Titanfall 2
Titanfall 2

The pinnacle of FPS cinematic single-player campaigns, for 3€. Although quite short, the campaign is great - incredible gameplay, environnements, and level design.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk

Gets a pass straight to A Tier just for reviving the Jet Set Radio fanbase. Funky beats, great parkour/tricks gameplay, and a story this time (although not very developped...)

Little Nightmares
Little Nightmares

The first installment of my favourite horror game series. Damn, the ambience in the game is HEAVY. This shit makes me shiver me timbers without any jumpscares. Also, cinematically and environnementally, insane game.

B
Zelda : Tears of the Kingdom
Zelda : Tears of the Kingdom

Not to be an asshole or anything, but despite being good, this game feels like it was made by the executives who wanted Breath of the Wild 2. The game is great, but it's just Breath of the Wild again, and the additions do not make up for how dissapointingly mild the game was.

Risk of Rain 2
Risk of Rain 2

The best 3D roguelite out there. Ignoring the dissapointing updates from Gearbox, the game's ambience, gameplay and music makes it so that every run feels different, but part of a coherent whole. It's great. Mods are also great. Everything Gearbox touches turns to coal.

Splatoon
Splatoon

The start of a great saga with a great gameplay foundation. Some of the best level design I have witnessed, with insane soundtrack and world building. I wish it hadn't held back on art direction. It looks almost neutered compared to other games in the series.

Jet Set Radio Future
Jet Set Radio Future

Jet Set Radio but with good gameplay this time. Story is still... non-existent, but the vibe is clearer now. The funky beats are also way better, in my opinion.

Super Mario Galaxy 2
Super Mario Galaxy 2

Not what I wanted for a second installment in the series... Ambience got gutted in favor of better levels, and while the soundtrack is good, it's very underutilised and sometimes even just not used correctly.

Hades
Hades

A great game all around! But makes poor use of its roguelite elements. The game is pretty, characters are hot, gameplay is fun and story is complex and interesting. It's just a shame the game's so... repetitive.

Enter the Gungeon
Enter the Gungeon

Probably my favourite 2D roguelite. Art direction is crazy, gameplay's insane and soundtrack is a banger. Every run is really different, and since most items are references, it's really fun if you're a huge nerd. Minus points for being a "wiki opened" kinda game.

Celeste
Celeste

Good soundtrack, good level design & gameplay, not much else to say. Celeste is just... a great game. But that's it. It's pretty but never gorgeous, fun but never exhilarating, it's just a solid, great game.

C
Splatoon 2
Splatoon 2

A good game, but dissapointing compared to Splatoon 1 & 3. What it lacks in freshness or inventive gameplay, it makes up for with great level design. It's just dissapointing and doesn't really expand on Splatoon 1's campaign.

Dauntless
Dauntless

(Talking about the game before The Incident). Very fun monster hunting game more focused on learning enemy paterns than anything else. Art direction was good, monsters were nice and gameplay was fluid. I'll miss those nights of hiding the Switch in my room to play Dauntless until 3am...

Superliminal
Superliminal

Trippy fucking game. The story's nice, but doesn't go far. Makes nice use of its mechanics, but never really expands too much. Definitely an experience, but not really life changing or anything. The redeeming quality is that conceptual representation is always cool.

Jet Set Radio
Jet Set Radio

Gameplay and story aren't that great if I'm honest. But this game started an entire new genre of music and art, so I don't really mind. It's... an experience.

Control
Control

Great gameplay and environnements, but poor level design and story. I really loved the art direction for the environnements, and the themes of the game. But somehow, every bit of gameplay felt... restrained by the game's level degign, which is the opposite of what it should be...

D
The Low Road
The Low Road

A good little adventure, but very short, with very few complex puzzles. The story is nice, but never really gets super interesting or anything. In my opinion, the game had more potential than what it ended up being.

SLUDGE LIFE 2
SLUDGE LIFE 2

A nice little game, 100% finishable in like, less than 5 hours. The art direction is cool, but you can quickly get bored of it. Humor's nice, and message is kinda good ? But that's it.

Starbound
Starbound

Once a great game that could've been an excellent game but ended up a good game. Starbound's beta was better than the final game we have today. Chucklefish abandonned it and although the modding community is one of the best in history, the game is just... not great. Not bad, but not great.

E
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

(SINGLEPLAYER WISE) I don't know. I expected something... More. The only interesting part of the singleplayer was the map ? And that's pretty bad. This singleplayer basically only has value for people who already are fans of the base game.

F
Dauntless : Awakening
Dauntless : Awakening

Oh, how deep fall those who once soared high... Whodda thunk that getting bought by a crypto company would ruin a game ! There's nothing left : monster intelligence was gutted, performance worsened and art direction was neutered. And you have to pay for weapons instead of crafting them from monster parts... I'll miss you, buddy.

Tierlist

Warning : This tierlist isn’t trying to be objective, and is just my heavily biased opinion.

Also, there’s a difference between “in my opinion, the best >thing< ever made” and “my favourite >thing< ever made

To explain the tiers a bit :

  • S Tier

    • Reserved for art that genuinely changed the way I see certain things, oftentimes overwriting my understanding of many concepts.
    • Ex : Outer Wilds and Hyper Light Drifter helped my abstract the concept of “death”, of an “end”. Hollow Knight made me reevaluate my entire idea of what a game was, and Super Mario Galaxy made me understand what art is supposed to feel like.
  • A Tier

    • Didn’t make me question life itself, but still really fucking good. If I hadn’t played Super Mario Galaxy at a really young age, or if I hadn’t experienced Hollow Knight exactly during my artistic formative years, they’d be A Tier.
  • B Tier

    • Almost excellent, oftentimes held back by really simple details, like Splatoon which, to me, held back too much on art direction and expressiveness.
  • C Tier

    • Great work, would recommend after experiencing it, but wouldn’t gush about it like I do with my favourites.
  • D Tier

    • Good, but nothing more, or bad but with potential. Most triple AAAs end up here.
  • E Tier

    • Plain bad. Not even bad enough to hate it. Chucked into the void and never brought up again.
  • F Tier

    • Terrible. To the point where I actively hate this piece of media. Would recommend NOT to experience it.
